A Thousand Steps Into the Night by Traci Chee

A Thousand Steps Into the Night Book Review  Rating:  ★  ★  ★  ☆  ☆ (3.75 out of 5) Thank you to everyone who responded to February’s book review survey. A Thousand Steps Into the Night by Traci Chee won majority vote.  After reading The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh (last month’s book) I was very impressed with the fantasy-adventure-esque genre. So, while I was browsing in the bookstore, a Japanese-inspired adventure into the world of spirits and demons immediately piqued my interest. The overall plot of this book had so much potential, and it seemed like a Studio Ghibli story. I thought Traci Chee did an excellent job at world-building, with clear and vivid descriptions of mythical beasts and spirits. While Miuko was the protagonist, my favorite character was Geiki. I enjoyed reading about his mischievous behavior rooted in him being a thieving bird spirit. However, the reason why the book is not five stars is because of the execution. The...

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea Book Review Rating: 4.75/5 Thank you to everyone who voted for December’s book! The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh won the majority vote.  Alongside Six Crimson Cranes and The Red Palace, this book has been one of my favorite reads. It is beautifully written, and as I read it, I became fully immersed in the descriptive and vibrant spirit world. My favorite character was Mina as she was a strong, driven, and intelligent female lead while being kind and compassionate. Romance is a significant part of this story and discusses the topic of fated lovers. The romance between Shin and Mina is pretty predictable as it follows the enemy-to-lovers trope, but their chemistry is adorable. I also loved the side characters, especially Dai, Mask, Namgi, and Kirin, and their lore was very interesting.  The novel is based on Korean folklore, specifically the story of Shim Cheong, 심청. While the story incorporates some of the ideas from the Kore...

A Few Announcements (Blog Updates + Where I've Been)

Hello everyone! I know its been a while since I’ve posted… However, during that time, I have been working on ways to improve my blog. Hopefully with these new updates, I will be able to return to a more consistent posting schedule!  Where I’ve Been:  I’ve mentioned this in a couple posts previously, but this year I started high school, and with that came a lot more homework! It’s been a bit of a hassle trying to balance the new work flow with my extracurricular activities and settling into my new school. Also, it probably doesn’t help that I spend a lot of time on my phone… I’ve also been in quite the reading slump recently. But, starting December, I will try my best to post more frequently!  Updates to the Blog: 1. The first update to this blog is the addition of a new feature! From now on, before the upcoming month, I will be posting a survey to help determine what book I will review for that month. There will be 3 different books I am looking into for you guys to choos...

I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga

I Hunt Killers Book Review Rating: 4/5 As Halloween approaches and the fall season begins, it is the perfect time to curl up in my bed, enjoy the cold weather, and read murder mystery books! While it hasn’t become colder in my area yet (in fact, we just went through a heat wave), murder mystery books are a must, regardless of the weather. To be honest, I have fallen into a reading slump, and with the transition into high school, it has been pretty difficult to find time to read. But as I’ve finally started to settle in and I’ve become increasingly excited for fall and winter, I became inspired to pick up reading again… after about a month-and-a-half-long break. When I went to the library with my mom, immediately the spine of I Hunt Killers caught my eye.  The book instantly captured my interest as it opened with a crime scene straight away. I Hunt Killers takes a unique narrative, told from the main character Jazz’s perspective, the son of an infamous serial killer, Billy Dent. Jaz...

The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

The Sun is Also a Star Book Review Rating: 4.25/5 This month, I started high school, and over the summer, I was assigned The Sun is Also a Star for summer reading. I’ve passed by this book multiple times in the library but I never got around to reading it, so when I saw it on the summer reading list, of course I decided to read it. It’s so cool that Nicola Yoon and her husband, David Yoon, are both authors.  The Sun is Also a Star is a bittersweet insta-love romance. As soon as I opened to the first page, this book immediately captured my attention as it switched between Daniel, a son of Korean immigrants, and Natasha, an undocumented immigrant from Jamaica. Along with their perspectives, we get slivers of  stories of side characters and informational sections weaved into the story. The random chapters of different characters were actually one of my favorite parts of the book. At first, while reading the sections, I thought they had no purpose, but as everything began to come ...
