Jackaby by William Ritter

Jackaby Book Review

Rating: 4.75/5

When I first decided to read Jackaby, I had high expectations because it's been a while since I last read a murder mystery book. But when I read that the main character is a supernatural detective, I became less enthusiastic about reading this book. I'm not a fan of supernatural or paranormal books because I usually find them to be a bit cheesy. But I decided to push through and see what this book had in store. I'm so happy I ended up choosing this book because it had the perfect twists, turns, and characters.

My favorite characters were Jackaby and Abigail Rook. Jackaby is a quirky and eccentric character, and I loved him for that. He would always be a step ahead of everyone else and would look at things with a closer eye than others. Abigail Rook, Jackaby's assistant, is smart, resourceful, and resilient. Jackaby and Abigail are a perfect team when it comes to solving the murders in this book. They help each other uncover the many layers of this mystery. The story's plot has so many twists and turns, and I was definitely surprised by the ending. I was very consumed by this book, and it was a quick and easy read. This book also has a sequel, so I'm excited to see what thrilling mystery Jackaby and Abigail solve next!

After leaving her home, Abigail Rook finds herself in the city of New Fiddleham, America. Because she is short of money, she looks for a job and comes across Jackaby, a detective who is looking for an assistant. Abigail and Jackaby both are excellent at finding key details, but Jackaby is able to see past what the normal eye can see. He can sense the presence of magic and supernatural beings. On the first day of her job with Jackaby, Abigail is whisked into the mysterious web of a serial killer. As more and more victims start to die, it becomes urgent for Jackaby and Abigail to solve the case as quickly as possible. But as the case starts to unfold, it is revealed that the perpetrator may not be a human after all...
