Suggested Reading Book Review
Rating: 3.75/5
When I first got this book, I didn't really know what to expect. It's not as dramatic as the most recent books I've read, but after reading the inside flap, I was intrigued. This book discusses banned books, which I thought would be an interesting topic. As some of you reading may know, several places are trying to ban, and have banned, books about race, gender and sexuality. Suggested Reading is something that could be our possible future, with books being silently taken off the shelves and the discouragement of reading about certain topics. I think it's important that books like Suggested Reading spread awareness to readers.
I thought this book was good. The plot was interesting, and even though the ending was quite predictable, I still enjoyed it. After finishing the book, I felt pretty happy, but nothing really stood out to me. My biggest problem with Suggested Reading is the lack of character development. Clara was compassionate and clever, but besides her love for books, I didn't really know anything else about her. The rest of the characters had their own problems, but their stories felt unfinished. We barely got to know about Ashton or Resi, who were significant to the plot. Jack, whose problems were important to the plot, was hardly mentioned. Characters other than Clara weren't very memorable.
I wanted to hear more about how Jack felt about his life but during the climax of the story, but the book barely focused on him, even if the problem was about Jack. There should have been more writing about him, but ultimately, it felt like his feelings were covered by unnecessary filler. I don't think this book was bad. I enjoyed it while I read it, but it didn't really impact me in the ways that I thought it would.
Books are basically Clara Even's life. Without them, she wouldn't be the person she is now. She attends classes at Lupton Academy, a prestigious private high school, and is the main volunteer at the school's library. When she finds out that her school has been secretly banning books over the years, she knows she has to do something. How could the books that impacted her so greatly be considered inappropriate? With the assistance of the librarian, her best friend, and many others, Clara fights to protect the books she has loved so much. However, when her fight is connected to an unexpected tragedy, will Clara persevere or give up?
