The Red Palace by Jane Hur

 The Red Palace Book Review

 Rating: 5/5

I love, love, loved this book! Before this book, I was in a reading slump. I felt like I didn't have time to read at all and would get bored pretty quickly after reading a few pages of any book. But when my school's Thanksgiving break rolled around, I was able to sit down and finally start to read a book, which happened to be The Red Palace! It reminded me why I love to read, especially murder mysteries, so I am very excited to be reviewing this book.

I'm sure many of you reading have watched or heard about Korean dramas. They are full of romance, excitement, and- of course- drama. It starts with watching one episode, but before you know it, that one episode becomes three and then an all-out binge-watch. I mean, who wouldn't? They're so interesting and addicting, it's hard to not love them. When I opened this book, the sole purpose of it was to show myself that I was finally reading a book so I wouldn't feel so guilty for spending my days just watching TV. However, I became engulfed in the book and finished it super quickly.

The book was like a Korean drama, without the guilt of being on TV for so long. It was a win-win! The plot was so interesting and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the characters in the book, and the ending was so emotionally satisfying. I love books with good endings. The touch of romance was perfect, and the characters matched each other very nicely. This book is a great fast-paced, intriguing murder mystery. I recommend this to anyone who wants an easy but interesting read.

The story takes place in Joseon, a Korean dynastic kingdom. Hyeon is a palace nurse, and her main concerns are to keep her head down and do a good job. But when 4 women are murdered in a single night, and her motherly mentor is the prime suspect, Hyeon is determined to prove her mentor's innocence. She is suddenly thrown into the vicious world of court politics and she starts her private investigation. Along the way, she meets Eojin, a young police inspector, who is also searching for the true killer. Soon, they start to find evidence that points the massacre to the Crown Prince. Hyeon and Eojin work together to solve and uncover the hidden truths in the palace, even if it means risking their lives.
